I’m going to jump right in and say what my goal is… then I’ll explain and more importantly, I want to hear your goals. Please send them back so we can all work together.
I want to have 47 people following my YouTube channel by my birthday in August.
Goals are important because they help us keep moving forward. Staying the same is okay but being better in some way, shape, or form is way more appreciated, isn’t it? Have you ever reached a goal and said “I wish I didn’t accomplish that?” Granted, you might have experiences that were good or bad along the way but overall, I bet it felt good to finish something you were trying to achieve.
So here’s why I shared my goal and why you can share yours too. It holds you accountable. Once you put it out there in the universe, others can support you, guide you, and even challenge you to reach further. The power of support can be amazing and make you feel great! Science has shown over an over again the power of social support is just that… powerful.
Now…this is what you have been waiting for… (not a bad pun) but what every goal should consist of when structuring it to be most effective. Every goal should have 5 pieces to make it more attainable and shareable. Think about the acronym S.M.A.R.T
Specific: What is the goal? Make it as comprehensive as possible. Ex: I want more followers on Youtube
Measurable: Again… numbers. What can you quantify? Ex: I want at least 47 followers
Attainable: Can you make your goal happen? Ex: I already have a Youtube channel so yes. It’s attainable.
Realistic: Can the goal happen realistically and how do you fit it in with good timing? Ex: Yes. My goal is realistic with your support! Please help me reach the goal.
Timely: When do you want to reach the goal by? This ties in with realistic above. Ex: I want to reach my goal by my birthday.
As we can see above, our goals can work in any of several combinations:
- A goal can be intrinsic. Something we do on our own.
- It can be extrinsic. Something we set ourselves and work with others to reach the goal.
- It can be cooperative. Something you create and reach towards together.
How you choose your goal is up to you. If you feel you need support, it is good to involve others. If you prefer to work alone, these goals can feel just as good and sometimes even better. What is most important is that you don’t change your goal just to achieve it. Don’t “water” it down to make yourself feel good. That is called cheating J If you miss your goal, restructure it and try again. Look in the mirror and ask why you missed the goal. Is there something you can do differently to achieve it better or more efficiently next time?
Overall, as humans, we can achieve amazing things, we can work together as a community to also achieve things together. We can share knowledge, goals, skills, and experiences together to reach new heights. Your goal will start to make you a better person by building your confidence, helping you feel good emotionally, and as you flex your goal setting strength; you will get fitter, not bitter that you can flex those goal muscles when you need to. Those goal muscles will help you on your next adventure and …For Your Life™
Let’s get goal setting!
